Smithson Craighead Academy, the first charter school in Nashville, was founded in August 2003. It is located in northeast Nashville and currently serves 220 at-risk children in kindergarten through grade 4. The rigorous curriculum includes the Reading Success program, which is highly effective with at-risk children. Students are taught the basic skills of reading, math, science, social studies, and computer, with special emphasis on reading in every subject area. Smithson Craighead Academy makes the whole child a priority. A major goal is to transform children from a culture of poverty to a culture of learning. The staff models and teaches self-control and other positive behaviors and values so that each child can grow into an adult who is caring of others, responsible, and employable. At Smithson Craighead, no child has been suspended or expelled, and no child has failed a grade. The school has met the Annual Yearly Progress required by No Child Left Behind every year. The school is named after Mary Smithson Craighead, legendary Metro Nashville educator whose motto was "save every child."
