The Memphis Academy of Health Sciences (MAHS) holds the honor of one of the first charter middle schools in Tennessee. MAHS equips its students with the necessary skills to be competitive in the 21st Century, providing an interdisciplinary program that incorporates experiential learning and that is centered on a health science theme. MAHS's students will demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, and calculate with clarity and precision. With the help of Volunteer Memphis, MAHS has recruited over 25 tutors to work with students in all core subject areas. Members of the 100 Black Men of Memphis, the Governing Board of MAHS, routinely mentor and volunteer at the Academy, working on personal development and building the foundation to create upstanding citizens of the world. MAHS is currently serving over 275 students in the middle school and was just approved for a high school the 2008-2009 academic school year. There are presently over 90 students enrolled in the high school.
